What is the best procedure to get rid of stretch marks?
By Dr. Mauro C. Romita

The only way to truly get rid of stretch marks is to surgically remove the skin areas which have them, this means a tummy tuck or thigh lift while very effective they do leave scars. Outside these surgical areas however, they can be improved significantly but never totally eliminated.

Pink stretch marks in light skinned individuals respond very well to visible light laser and Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) treatments, the color disappearing in four to six comfortable sessions.

Light stretch marks can be effectively treated with invisible light lasers such as carbon dioxide. These create new collagen, filling in the stretch mark and shrinking it simultaneously they also uniform the surrounding skin surface.

These above two modalities can be done in sequence and have very long term effects, making them quite cost effective. Darker skinned individuals require much lower power settings and pre treatment with lightening creams.

Topical stretch mark creams have minimal effect, the most worth while are those containing growth factors such as Nouricel™ and pentapeptides to increase collagen production Likewise microdermabrasion is of some benefit depending on the intensity, and is usually less expensive than the laser treatments.

There are no miracles in stretch mark therapy, avoid quick fixes and consult a reputable plastic surgeon or dermatologist.

SMART ANSWER:
Laser and Intense Pulsed light therapy, surgical removal, and physician prescribed topical products containing growth factors.
