Volumetric Facelift
By Dr. Mauro C. Romita

"Volumetric facelift" is a broad term. It may refer to repositioning the deep facial structure in a surgical procedure with minimal skin removal. It may mean filling out the face by injecting fat or other substances just below the surface of the skin, without making an incision. Some people call the use of facial implants made of silicone or other materials a volumetric facelift, but that is a misnomer. Implants augment but don't lift.

When we say "volumetric" and "lift" in the same breath, it generally implies both a repositioning of the deep facial structure and the restoration of volume, either by injecting the patient's own fat or a filler like Restylane or Radiesse, or by inserting a silicone implant. Done properly, this combination can yield very satisfying results that are more natural and lasting than the results of either procedure by itself.

Using injectables alone to camouflage sagging can be effective in the very early stages of aging, when there has been minimal change in one's appearance. But there is no actual lifting of the face without some form of surgery. Facelift techniques have become much less invasive over the years. In some cases, repositioning the sagging fat layers will be enough to restore volume and a youthful look. We do this with very short, precise incisions and an endoscope, and the healing time is less than a week.
