Scarves and turtlenecks are one way to hide signs of aging on your neck, but it is possible to unwrap yourself. The upper chest and lower neck (décolletage), in women, often show the most dramatic premature aging, in fair-skinned individuals. A combination of factors are usually involved: loss of collagen and elasticity leading to lines and wrinkles; development of brown/age spots, broken blood vessels (Telanglectasias), and rough spots (Keratoses) leading to uneven texture and pigmentation; and changes in the underlying muscles leading to bands in the neck.

Since so many changes are occurring, multiple treatment modalities are needed to completely rejuvenate this area. Luckily, there are many options that can be done with little or no downtime.

The loss of collagen and elasticity can be addressed with Fractional laser or IPL (Intense Pulsed Light), topical preparations, and chemical peels.

Brown spots, Telangiectasis, and Keratosis can be treated with IPL, with or without the addition of Levulan (Aminolevulinic Acid) and/or a combination of chemical peels.
Vertical lines in the neck (Platysmal Banding) can be addressed with Botox injections, or, if more severe, surgical tightening.

Prevention of further damage is through sun protection – judicious use of sunscreen of SPF 30 or higher and topical preparations containing Antioxidant properties, (for example, vitamin C).

The décolletage is an area that is often ignored in the rejuvenation process, but it can be treated easily and should be a part of any rejuvenation program.
