Having graduated from the SUNY Downstate Medical Center, he is currently an Attending at the New York Methodist Hospital in Park Slope, Brooklyn, and an Assistant Clinical Professor at the Weill Medical College of Cornell University.
As the senior physician in de Fazio Obstetrics & Gynecology, where he works with his two brothers in a practice which was started by their father over 45 years ago, Dr. de Fazio specializes in aesthetic and minimally invasive gynecologic surgery. The newest member of SkinMDny, he offers a variety of services, ranging from basic gynecology to sophisticated outpatient procedures using state of the art equipment which are performed in a comfortable office setting.
Gynecologic services range from the annual well-woman gynecologic exam, Pap smears, HPV testing, and contraception to Gardasil administration (the HPV vaccine), treatment of painful menses, heavy menses, endometriosis, fibroids, premenstrual dysphoric disorder, hormonal imbalances and hot flashes.
For women who desire permanent birth control, Dr. de Fazio offers the Essure procedure, the only hysteroscopic tubal occlusion approved by the FDA. This procedure is done without any incisions, hormones, burning or unattractive scars, and offers patients a quick return to normal activity. It has the lowest failure rate of any female sterilization procedure (99.80% effective), it doesn’t have the risks or discomfort of laparoscopic procedures, and it takes less than 10 minutes to perform.
Using the latest technology, women who suffer from excessive menstrual bleeding may be candidates for an endometrial ablation, a procedure that provides an effective and minimally invasive outpatient alternative to hysterectomy, and avoids the potential side effects and risks of hormonal therapy. Using various techniques, the lining of the uterine cavity or endometrium, which is the part of the uterus that actually bleeds during a woman’s menses, is removed or destroyed, while the uterus is preserved. Over 90% of patients have their bleeding reduced to light or moderate periods, and many report that their bleeding stops completely.
Women who have developed stretched vaginal tissue and relaxation of vaginal muscles due to childbirth may be candidates for a vaginoplasty. During childbirth, the muscles and tissue of the vagina are traumatized and weakened, sometimes affecting the quality of a couple’s sexual experience. Kegel excercises may not be sufficient to reverse this damage. Vaginoplasty is a surgical procedure where the vaginal muscles are tightened and excessive vaginal mucosa is removed, thereby increasing vaginal muscle tone and contraction strength.
Labiaplasty is a surgical procedure that reshapes the contour of the labia minora, the tissue that surrounds the opening of the vagina. Some women are born with large labia, sometimes asymmetrical labia, while other women may develop enlargement of the labia after childbirth, or as they get older. This may result in painful intercourse and irritation when wearing tight clothing. Others may feel unattractive or embarrassment with a sexual partner. Surgical labial reduction can improve the appearance and contour of enlarged or asymmetrical labia, and can be done under local anesthesia.
